Helmi Sharawy has directed the Arab A frican Research Center, in Cairo, since its creation in 1987. Under his energeic guidance, AARC became, in Egypt, the Middle East., as well as in Africa generally, a partner not to be ignored, in any serious cultural or political debate, concerning the challenges ... that confront the Pepoles of all of these regions. Despite the stringent administrative tasks imposed by his directorship, Helmi has never faild to bring his own personal contribution to such debates. The collection of articales chosen for this Publication in English, is clear evidence of the wide range of subjects covered by him. Such contributions entail a critical reading of the relations between the Arab and African Worlds in the past and present; the expression of the cultural dimensions of their Liberation Struggle; the role of civil society in their current struggles; and the perspectives that such struggles open for a possible Renaissance.
